I think I’m naturally drawn to the way that speculative fiction allows me to escape the conventions of this world and enter another. What drew you to SFF as an emerging writer? Did you always know that you wanted to write a fantasy novel? We talked to Henderson about how her upbringing in one of America’s most haunted cities shaped her writing and how she crafted Immanuelle Moore’s journey to the dark heart of her society. And while Henderson’s fundamentalist world of Bethel does invite comparisons to the horrors of Gilead, a more apt parallel may be the 2015 horror film The Witch, in which a young Puritan girl discovers that the only avenue for self-determination in her deeply misogynist and joyless world may be to embrace all that is forbidden, sinful and powerful. Many early reviews have compared Alexis Henderson’s debut novel, The Year of the Witching, to other feminist dystopian novels such as The Handmaid’s Tale. ![]()

The 62-year-old British author has set this unhurried exploration of grief and longing in the English countryside, but it’s infected with the violent terrors of contemporary life. “Wish You Were Here” is an extraordinary novel, the work of an artist with profound insight into human nature and the mature talent to deliver it just the way he wants. ![]() “Tomorrow” was clearly just a Booker winner’s misstep, an awkward exorcism of some writerly kink. Arguably America's leading Christian ethicist, Gushee has written many helpful books for churches, discussion groups, and individuals. David Gushee offers a powerful, inspiring message of hope and healing by helping Christians to return to Bible study, prayer, and reflection in a way that creates a vision for a more inclusive church. As much as ever, many people still experience deep condemnation by evangelical and other churches, getting kicked out or altogether leaving. Both because these comics are absolutely hilarious, and because it’s possible someone will read them and rethink their treatment of female characters. It’s an issue I think about a lot, and I’m glad to see it receiving this kind of treatment. Like Sherlock Holmes, female characterization is something I could go on about for longer than would be appropriate here. They may be tough, they may be powerful, they may kick ass, but they are actually extremely weak characters. The Strong Female Characters are an expert skewering of women’s representation in media. Note: Strong Female Characters are not to be confused with Strong Female Protagonist. I was in the former camp and agreed with the woman of Irish origin who said the whole thing was “too English” – and middle class southerner English to boot. Tessa Hadley‘s The past (2015), December’s Book Group book, occasioned a split between those who couldn’t warm particularly to any of the middle-aged siblings taking their annual time out together in an old house in the middle of nowhere with family connections, and those who thought that didn’t matter in the matter of how well crafted a novel it was.
